Practice makes perfect

Drum roll please....you'll notice over in the side bar of my blog there is now a link to my new writer website. Pause for breath here as I begin the next stage of my writing journey.

So of course I'm asking for your opinions. All comments are gladly received (please be gentle though) - what am I missing or what can I improve on? If you had a need for writing or design services would this website be enough for you to want to hire me.

I amaze myself with how far I've come in just 2 short years. In that time I've started this blog, written my first book and created some amazing work. Plus the ideas just keep coming. This is a true indication that if you want to be a writer then you have to just write and the more you write, the better you get. Much like anything, if you want it bad enough and you practice often enough then you can succeed.

It also helps when you have an spectacular support network who push you and encourage you and believe in you. My family and friends are the best there is.

I've mentioned often enough that I still need to work on promoting myself. Putting my work out there makes me step out of my comfort zone. But I write for others to read, I create for others to enjoy - I certainly don't do it for it to sit on my hard drive and gather dust. So stepping out of my comfort zone is essential to move forward.

What have you tried that has worked in selling your work or your ideas? What's the best advice that you've received which has assisted in helping you grow and improve?

  1. Looks like a good website to me. I know what you mean about stepping out of your comfort zone, I started posting one of my goof-off stories on a blog and have several times had to push myself to keep posting it (not writing, but actually posting it.) If I want to be a published writer, though, the second step after writing is allowing other people to read it and rip it apart. :) Congrats on the website!

    1. Putting it out there is so incredibly hard - I still have moments when I write a blog post and then wonder whether I should post it or not, let alone a book.

  2. Something to keep in mind - "If it's to be, it's up to me". I don't know who to attribute this quote to but it's something I always remember when I want something badly enough.

Love the look of the new web site - good luck with it!

  3. Looks good. I'm going to give you some real practical advice from the experience of running two businesses with websites. Put this on your front page.

"I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Creative Writing with a minor in Sociology and since finishing university I've added to my list of achievements by completing diplomas in Business Management and Project Management."

Maybe slightly depersonalize the about me page and be more focused on work accomplishments but that does depend on the 'feel' you want to generate.

As soon as you get projects, start incoprporating them in your portfolio page. If you have anything you can use already add it in.

You do have to 'get out there'. That includes in person if there are trade shows you can get to. That will help with networking on a closer level with potential clients. In person is an easier sell and gives you a base to build on when growing your website business.

Hopefully all solicited advice, correct? With one of our companies I had to learn to step up and sell face to face when I would rather hide. No matter what, you have to have the air of confidence that you are the best. I think you do have that ability.
