6WS - Greener grass on the other side?

Should I feel sad, disgruntled or bemused? My cat has defected because the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence.

She’s old, senile and doddery – much as I imagine I’ll be at her age, which is about 105 in cat years. Actually to be alive at that age in my house is just an amazing feat in itself. Fifteen years in a house with dogs, numerous animals and three growing boys.

Over the last few months she’s started walking into things and being off balance. The thing is she's still been happy and eating well, so I figured I could hold off on the inevitable.

A couple of weeks ago she disappeared for three days and I feared the worst, the dog had chased her next door and she never came back that night, or the next. When she finally came back three days later, she wasn’t eating her food and I was faced with the reality that the time had probably come.

When I mentioned it to my husband he told me I should probably check with the neighbours because he’s pretty sure they’d said something about feeding a little cat that was coming around. Hubby is not a cat lover and wouldn’t have even stopped to think that they were talking about my cat.

It seems that while my cat is old and doddery, she’s not stupid. On the other side of the fence is bliss in the form of a comfy old lounge chair on the verandah where a nice older lady sits for her regular cigarettes. The food is just as good and there’s also no dog with boundless energy chasing her on the other side of the fence.

Plus there’s no noise, no drama and no bullshit - I think I might move to the other side of the fence as well.

We all hope that our ‘golden’ years will be peaceful and quiet, so how can I be resentful when I know that she’s safe and calm and happy?

Cheers, Fi

  4. We had a cat that did that years back. Just as long as she is happy, right. I like restlessjo's comments. Hope you are having a great week my friend!

  6. Hi Fi ~~ I know you are missing Bella so very much. She is a pretty cat and I am sure that some one will love to feed her. I HOPE SHE COMES BACK SOON!!!

Our old dog who became blind, Toto (now deceased), once ran away with three other dogs. At least that was who brought her back home after a three day absence, three other dogs. They were all muddy from their outing. This was witnessed by our neighbor girl who put Toto in her garage until I returned home. The first order was to give blind Toto a good bath.

Again, best wishes for both you and Bella.

  7. Cats! Always have a mind of their own. If you've been neighbours for a long time, then you should feel honoured that the cat only deserted you when she needed to, and not before. That's quite a big deal :)
