I am a mother first

It seems that Mothers Day has the ability to make me just a little nostalgic and also makes me reflect on just what sort of a mother I am. I'm a mother who would walk to the moon and back for my children, and a mother who would jump in front of a moving truck to save one of them.

At the same time I'm a mother who will not lay down and let my children walk all over her and who takes pride in helping her children grow in to responsible, loving and well-meaning young men who can stand on their own two feet and make a valuable contribution to this world.

Just because I'm a mother doesn't mean I can't have a life of my own or do things for myself. It also doesn't make me selfish to want to achieve things other than being a 'mum'. In doing this I also teach my boys that mums are people too, that we have hopes and dreams and goals aside from being their mum.

In being mums we don't always get it right, we mess up, we make mistakes and we sometimes get it wrong (not very often mind you.) The thing is, as a mother every thing I do - be it right or wrong, is motivated by love and a desire to protect my boys and make sure they're happy.

It doesn't matter if they're babies, toddlers or grown up men with their own families, I am their mother first. Being a mother is definitely my greatest achievement and damn if I'm not proud of my three boys and the men they're becoming.

To every mother today, pat yourself on the back and revel in the knowledge that as mothers most of the time we get it right and when we do occasionally mess up - well then a hug and a kiss often fixes most of the blips on the motherhood journey.

...and to my special mum - I love you to the moon and back.

Hugs to all the mums today, Fi

  1. Such a sweet post! I love the idea that you taught your boys that moms are people, too. So many times I feel guilty when I have my own hopes and dreams, and my efforts to reach those goals pull me away from my family. Like you said, though, I am a person, too. I think it makes me a better mom to have my own sense of accomplishment in life, outside of my family. I'm just excited we are all in this together.

  2. Guilt comes with being a mother doesn't it? But I agree that it makes me a better mum to have my own goals and dreams and for my boys to see me achieving them.
