I did a bad, bad thing

Remember me, I used to write here quite frequently, now two weeks seems like a life time not to write. New job and life has been kind of crazy, I'm now four weeks in and not quite as terrified as I was at the beginning. I'm starting to find my feet finally.

Now for my bad, bad thing and the reason I just had to share it with you. I have to point out the reality is you can be laughing hysterically and mortified by what you've done all in one.

I've been cutting my boys hair since they were toddlers, I'm kind of handy with a set of clippers and kind of not. In 20 odd years I've never had a whoops, never - until tonight. It was a doozy.

Middle son wanted a hair cut - so short through the sides, longer on top. Piece of cake, only you should never take a phone call in the middle of a haircut. Had taken the guard off to trim around his ears, answered the phone call and chatted to a girlfriend for several minutes and then went back to do a final once over.

Yes, I forgot to put the guard back on, so bald patch on one side. Do you know how evil brothers can be when they can laugh at a siblings misfortune. Merciless both of them and out with i-phones to immediately post photos to Facebook.

I was horrified and his girlfriend was just as horrified, only she kept saying I'm glad it was you and not me. He can't stay angry with you forever. Yeah you think? I'm certainly not on his favourite mum list that's for sure.

Thankfully he's a tradie and one who wears a baseball cap to work everyday - thank god. Could you imagine if he worked in an office? Now if it had of been youngest, he probably wouldn't have left the house until it grew back. Middle son will cope, he has a somewhat mowhawk - we talked him out of shaving the whole lot off.

I also will not share a photo because I'm not as cruel as his brothers.

So other than traumatising my children, what have I been doing? Working, working and a little bit more working. Hubby and I have been getting out on the weekends in the new car and checking out all the country markets which has been really nice.

Life and work absorbs a lot of my writing and blogging time at the moment as well, but sometimes making a living and family are more important than sharing the stories about it all.

Last weekend we spent a night up the river with friends who have family members with a shack on the riverfront. Yeah I could have stayed for a month. How's this, the view from the balcony.

I've been to a couple of networking functions at work in the last few weeks. I was so meant to work in the education industry, I feel like I've come home. I've also made enquiries into doing an MBA (Masters in Business) which is something that I've toyed with for a while.

Hubby didn't have a coronary when I came home from an information night about the MBA and told him the cost and the commitment involved. I took that to be a decidedly good sign. I think he might have realised that occasionally I know what's right for me and that arguing about it is pointless.

I plan on signing up this week to start in February - it's all achievable while you work, so weekends and evenings for classes and with a strong work focus, so very hands on and practical applications in your job. 2014 is going to be a busy, busy year, because while it's achievable it's not going to be easy.

My boys are almost grown up and largely self-sufficient these days, so it's time. Studying is what I love doing, so now is as good a time as any.

That's my last two weeks in a nutshell, so what has everyone else been up to?

Cheers, Fi

  1. Oh, no! I've done the same to Daniel's hair before, and we did wind up just shaving it all. Unfortunately, I had gone straight down the middle with my first swipe of the trimmers. Thank goodness hair grows back relatively quickly!

  2. I always thought about cutting my own hair and I finally had decided to cut it myself a couple of weeks ago. I usually just get a buzz cut when I go to get my hair cut so I thought it would be easy to cut it myself. Although it was a little sloppy I thought it looked ok, but everybody could tell that I had cut it myself and weren't surprised when I told them, so I guess I didn't do such a great job. Maybe i'll go get my cut from a professional next time! : )

  3. Oh Gosh! You are brave though. I cut my girls hair but when my youngest wanted a buzz I sent her to the pro's. Not taking any chances on that. At least it will grow : ) MBA-Go You!
